mpd steht für "Music Player Daemon" und ist ein Dienst, der unter Linux für die verteilte Musikwiedergabe zuständig ist.
Music Player Daemon (MPD) is a flexible, powerful, server-side application for playing music. Through plugins and libraries it can play a variety of sound files while being controlled by its network protocol.

Nutzen:
Bei mir zu Hause möchte ich mpd nutzen, um meine Musik vom PC auf die Anlage im Wohnzimmer zu bekommen. Aktuell werde ich wahrscheinlich einfach meinen Laptop (den ich testweise mit etwas Musik befüllt habe) per SPDIF Anschluss an meinen Receiver im Wohnzimmer anschließen. Später ist geplant, den Laptop durch eine kleine Linuxkiste zu ersetzen und dort eine große Festplatte anzuschließen.
Im Internet gibt es zwar zahlreiche fertige Lösungen, doch die kosten alle erstmal etwas (wobei man schon recht günstig damit einsteigen kann), man muss aber fast überall bei dem ein oder anderen Punkt Abstriche machen.
mpd lässt sich später beispielsweise per Handy (Android / iPhone usw.), Windows usw. usf. fernsteuern.
Es gibt natürlich auch schon Receiver, die im Netzwerk freigegebene Musik abspielen können, doch das kann ich aktuell mangels eines fähigen Receivers noch nicht testen. Schön wäre natürlich, wenn der Receiver dann direkt mpd erkennt und darauf zugreifen kann.
Einrichtung / Installation mpd:
Nach anfänglichen Schwierigkeiten, gestaltete sich die Installation und Einrichtung von mpd doch recht simpel, man muss halt daran denken, dass die Berechtigungen stimmen und man zwischen Groß- und Kleinschreibung unterscheidet.
Installiert ist mpd relativ schnell über folgenden Befehl:
sudo apt-get install mpd
mpd verwendet eine Konfigurationsdatei, in der alle wichtigen Informationen verändert werden können. Stand heute wird die Konfigurationsdatei automatisch bei der Installation angelegt. Geändert werden kann sie über folgenden Befehl:
sudo gedit /etc/mpd.conf
In der Konfigurationsdatei würde ich auf jeden Fall das "music_directory", das "playlist_directory" sowie den "db_file" Pfad ändern, und zwar auf einen Ordner, wo man später seine Musik ablegen möchte.
Bei mir ist das "/home/dahead/Music/mpd/..."
Zu guter letzt sollte man die IP-Adresse des Rechners eintragen, auf dem wir gerade mpd installiert haben. Damit ist mpd von außen, d. h. von anderen Geräten im LAN/WLAN (bspw. vom Receiver, Handy, ...) erreichbar. Dieser Eintrag nennt sich "bind_to_address".
Ist das nicht gemacht, erscheint beispielsweise die Fehlermeldung "mpd failed to listen on x (line 69)". So war es zumindest bei mir.
Kann mpd nicht auf die Verzeichnisse zugreifen, erscheint beim Starten von mpd eine Fehlermeldung in der Konsole.
Zusammengefasst sieht die Konfiguration der oben genannten Abschnitte bei mir wie folgt aus:
music_directory "/home/dahead/Music"
playlist_directory "/home/dahead/Music/mpd/playlists"
db_file "/home/dahead/Music/mpd/tag_cache"
log_file "/var/log/mpd/mpd.log"
pid_file "/var/run/mpd/pid"
state_file "/var/lib/mpd/state"
user "mpd"
bind_to_address "192.168.178.28"
port "6600"
...
Anschließend sollte man via
sudo mpd --kill
mpd erstmal beenden, dann via
sudo mpd --create-db
die Datenbank neu anlegen lassen.
Ist das geschehen, kann mpd hoffentlich verwendet werden (gestartet ist es nach dem Anlegen der Datenbank bereits). Sollte es Probleme geben, sucht man am besten über Google nach der Fehlermeldung.
Zum Administrieren der Musik habe ich bei mir den "Gnome Music Player Client" installiert und ebenfalls konfiguriert.

Habe ich gerade (für mich) entdeckt. Mumford and Sons live mit "After the Storm". Das ebenfalls gute Album heißt "Sigh No More". Das Genre könnte man wohl Folk Rock nennen.
